Idiosyncracies? Me?
I was tagged! I've actually never been tagged before. Oh there have been those..."everyone who reads this is tagged" kind of tags. But that's so impersonal. And I click away from the impersonal with a grunt of disgust. But this time Torm tagged me, and she is cool, and seconds away from having her fourth child. So I feel compelled to comply with the request to list six idiosyncracies. Plus, this is a great topic for me. Because, you see, I am a bundle of idiosyncracies...which are increasing in number and complexity with age. So, here goes:
1. I've blogged before that I don't like ovals...really anything that is ovular is visually unpleasing to me. I like straight lines...squares in particular. My neighbor across the street has a beautiful home with a small oval window in highest eave. And while the home is beautiful, I probably couldn't have purchased based on the oval window alone.
2. I'm plagued by weird dreams about my teeth...they're falling out, they're loose and shaky, I'm actually holding them in my mouth with my fingers while I desperately search for a dentist. Because of these dreams I've become obsessed with dental hygiene. In fact, we now have two Sonicare toothbrushes, enough floss to wrap around the earth several times, that special Crest rinse, whitening trays, etc. If one of my kids complains about a tooth that is bothering them I have a small anxiety attack and demand that the dentist fit them in immediately. Intellectually, I know this teeth obsession is unfounded...but still...it hangs on.
3. I've been in love with Alan Alda since my early teen years. Well, specifically, Hawkeye from MASH. Early on, when Sterling and I were dating I made it quite clear that if Hawkeye ever walked on the scene and declared his undying love for me, I'd be gone in a heartbeat. I still have dreams about Hawkeye from time to time. And hand in hand with my TV idiosyncrasy is the fact that I was permanently traumatized when Mary Ingalls lost her vision on Little House on the Prarie. I can still vividly picture in my mind her sitting up in bed...in the dark...and screaming, "I can't see! I can't see!" It horrified me when I was a child and still horrifies me today.
4. I can't wear turtlenecks. Turtlenecks make me feel that I can't breathe...like the band of fabric around my neck will constrict until it robs me of my last breath. I don't like things touching my neck.
5. I have a hard time relaxing (unless it is a scheduled event). I can't stand everyone just slobbing around in their pajamas. I try to do it, but it makes me grouchy. I want everyone to get dressed and get moving.
6. I have a hard time wearing my hair down because I don't like it touching the back of my neck. It makes me hot and itchy. I've gotten better about this because it doesn't bother me as much if I Chi my hair after blow drying...it's not so poofy and hairy. Still...the minute I get home I whip my hair up into a ponytail.
Okay. That's pretty much it...except for my aversion to thick ropes (like they used to have at Long John Silver's) and my distaste for the ultra-size fork and spoon that was evidently a decorating icon during the 70's. When I lived in Utah we often drove by a house that had a giant fork and spoon mounted on their kitchen wall. When it was dark and their blinds were open you could get a really good view. Often, we would change our route just for a sighting of the oversized flatware. So, it turned into more of a novelty than a true disliking. Anyone have gigantic utensils they would like to share?
Now for your idiosyncracies. I tag Debbie, Jane, Becky & Carrie.

Oh, we are so alike. I too have the teeth dream. I had it 2 nights ago and have been worried about it even since...afraid it was a vision of sorts. I also like to get up and moving. The hair on the nexk has been a problem for me since I was small. I can remember tossing and turning and begging for a hair-cut to relieve my pain. Now, I've got to think of something origional for my post...I'm sure it won't be hard to come up with some more.

Oh, one more...my whole family got addicted to MASH when my mom was in the hospital for the last 12 weeks of her pregnancy with my brother. Actually she got hooked and then hooked the rest of us when she got home. I too was fond of Hawkeye. He was quite handsome and charming. I have to say I'm pretty good at MASH trivia...wanna play sometime?

What happened to those huge utensils? I'll try to find that house and see if they still have them. Do you remember where it was? 800 South? Also, that whitening stuff if bad for your teeth.

This is great! Got me thinking for days on my own personal idiosyncracies!! I am with you on the hair thing, teeth thing (sort of, maybe in a different way), and for sure the turtlenecks and relaxing problems!! What a great topic for us all to think about! LOL
