I finished this quilt today, in just a little over a week. I was making it for a service auction at church to benefit girls' camp. A few years ago (for the same auction) I made several small things...but this time I thought I'd concentrate on one big effort. Technically speaking, the girls were supposed to make the things. But I did a swap with them. For instance, "I'm working on your quilt, so you need to tidy the kitchen." Or "I'm working on your quilt, so you need to help Parker with spelling words." Or "I'm working on your quilt so crawl under the table and rub momma's feet." They contributed in their own way. Sort of.
I was going to quilt it in straight lines, but once I'd pieced the front I decided to free-motion quilt the darn thing. This takes longer and is semi-stressful (try pulling an entire quilt through a sewing machine arm), but it gives the quilt more body...which I prefer.
This quilt is a win for my lazy self for a number of reasons.
#1 - I had everything but a small section of the binding finished by Friday night, which meant I DID NOT PROCRASTINATE. What if I'm growing up ya'll? What if?
#2 - I made something I pinned. See? Sometimes Pinterest depresses me because as I'm pinning things I sometimes have this doomed feeling that I'm just a looker, not a doer. But nope, not this time. I did it.
#3 - I figured out the perfect time to make stuff. On most days I do my best to be finished with my work by the time the kids get home from school. I like to hang out with them in the kitchen for a while, and frankly, they just like me to be available to them in the afternoons. This past week I set up my sewing machine at the kitchen table and sewed while I chatted with the kids. This kept me off the computer and gave me time with the kids! Win/win. A few times the girls even brought their books down and studied while I sewed. It was super homey and nice. (Don't get me wrong...there was bickering...but I'm choosing to ignore that.)
While I was making this quilt I actually pieced two quilt fronts...one to give away and one for us. So I still need to quilt ours. Hoping I can get that done this week. Then I fully prepare to return to my slothful ways (wherein I sneak into my bedroom and watch American Idol while the kids do their homework).
beautiful quilt!
