Yesterday, while I was sitting in my study trying to read, a storm blew in. The rain picked up, and the monsooning began. If you don't live in Houston you might be unfamiliar with the coming-down-in-sheets type of rain I'm talking about. But here, in these parts, the rain can be fierce.
Yesterday, the rain was semi-fierce only in that the torrential downpour parts occurred in intervals...allowing all of the intricate draining systems to keep up. Mostly.
I know for many of you the rain is comforting. It's cozy. It helps you sleep better at night. And that's great for you...but then you're probably not a worrier. For me, a born-and-bred worrier, the rain is, well, worrisome. Yesterday, for instance, when the rain got loud and out of control I decided I'd better survey the land (all 25 feet of it). And good thing I did, because when I looked into the backyard the pool was just an inch shy of complete overflow (well an inch and then the coping). This caused my worry gene to start throbbing uncontrollably. [Here's what it says: DOOM! DOOM! DOOM!]
I immediately called Sterling (who is not a worrier).
Me: "Hon, it's raining really hard here and the pool looks like it might overflow."
Husband: "Okay." --silence--
Me: "Well, I'm worried that the overflow thingy on the pool might be clogged or not working."
Husband: "That's a possibility. You can go look out on the curb and see if water is flowing into the street."
Me: "Okay. Well wait by your phone because if it is clogged you are going to have to come home RIGHT AWAY!!!!!!"
Him: I'm not coming home if it's clogged. I'll take care of it this weekend.
Me: BUT WHAT IF OUR HOUSE FLOODS?
Him: Our house will not flood.
Great. He wasn't going to be any help. I'd have to figure out how to save the homestead all by myself (and no, I'm not joking). I went out to the street and saw that the overflow pipe thing was working just fine. Then I went to the backyard and looked at the pool level again. Then I went inside and read for five minutes and then got up to check the pool level again...just to see if the level was receeding (the rain had lessened). And then I checked it again about seven more times.
Phew! Crisis averted. Good thing I was home!!!
And that, my friends, is just a small window into the mind of a worrier. It's not a soothing place. AT ALL.
